Students in this area must have cognitive abilities that are in the 95th percentile or higher and show high levels of problem-solving abilities and divergent thinking skills. Typically they are several years beyond their peers in ability. Formal testing must be done to identify students in this domain.
Academically Gifted:
Students in this area demonstrate exceedingly high abilities in one or more specific academic areas, scoring in the 95th percentile or higher.
Visual & Performing Arts:
Students who demonstrate unusual adeptness or skill in one of these areas: music and/or art, would be considered for these programs:
*GT Music – Students who have skills in composing and/or producing music instrumentally. In order to qualify for G/T Music at Randall, students will be tested using two of the Musical Aptitude Profile tests created by Edwin E. Gordon, an assessment used internationally to track and measure musical understanding and aptitude. A student's score must fall into the normal scoring range of students at least two grade levels ahead of him or her in order to qualify for G/T Music.
*Music Excel- Vocally talented students Students identified in this area will have a music audition complete with singing a selected piece, demonstrating pitch matching skills, and singing qualities at an advanced level for their age.
*Art Excel- Specialized art for students with exceptional artistic skills. The student's art skills are 2 or more years advanced than their grade level. An art portfolio will be used to evaluate their artistic abilities.
Creativity:
This crosses many of the other areas but shows itself in a strong ability to originate products or ideas.
Leadership:
This is for students who demonstrate the ability to lead and/or are considered leaders by others. These students tend to be self-confident and comfortable with their peers.
*Peer Helpers-Students supporting new students or assisting existing students as needed from a peer level.
*Student Council-Service and leadership organization for students in grades 6-8.
